I’m really excited to kick off 2025 with this painting. The snake was so fun to paint. This is one of my first paintings on hanji, which I brought back from my visit to Korea last year. Hanji reacts very differently to paint and ink than other types of paper that I usually paint on, so it was pretty exciting to work with.

In addition to the snakes, I painted many motifs that I saw in Korea. Surrounding the snakes are designs from architectural motifs I saw on walls, gates, roofs. I imagine the motifs are ancient, yet they feel very modern to me, especially when put in the context of a painting.

The prints will obviously not be on hanji, but you can appreciate a delicacy and subtlety in the painting that can only be achieved by painting on hanji.
